19 October 2015: MCKIP draws investments from China worth RM2.2 billion, Iskandar/Johor eyes large scale Chinese industries while slamming China provocation in South China Seas and moving with US-driven TPPA. Najib placates Malaysian Chinese ruffled feathers.

Editor's note: There are a lot of migrant guest workers form Nepal in KL. At the bakery shop, I met the very friendly Nepal supervisor. He had been away for a few months as he had to go home to help his family, whose home was badly damaged by the earthquake, but fortunately his family was well. They are getting aid from China for rebuilding and he also mentioned that relations with India had deteriorated badly and Nepal was relying more on China. So, I am prompted to put in some snippets on Nepal-China and Sri Lanka-China that just caught my eye.

For Malaysia's balancing act between China and USA, the shift with TPPA moving ahead will be evolving faster. More negative talk on the foreign policy front on South China Seas, which now points to a solidly emerging trend. But still hoping for China FDI. PM Najib placates Malaysia Chinese feelings over something heated up over China envoy comments marring relations too.

Sri Lanka and Nepal - China

Let bygones be bygones, Colombo urges Beijing, as Chinese loans take their toll UPDATED : Sunday, 18 October, 2015, 10:18pm Debasish Roy Chowdhury Sri Lanka is urging China to put their disputes behind them and help the South Asian nation through one of its worst financial crises ever, caused partly by excessive Chinese loans contracted by the previous government of Beijing ally Mahinda Rajapaksa. “Chinese loans are a big part of our problem. A bulk of the government expenditure goes into servicing them,” Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake told the South China Morning Post in an exclusive interview. http://www.scmp.com/business/global-economy/article/1869177/let-bygones-be-bygones-sri-lanka-urges-china

Sri Lanka says would consider visit by China navy ships; BEIJING (Reuters) - Sri Lanka would consider allowing Chinese naval ships to visit again but no request has been forthcoming yet, the country's defense secretary said on Sunday. Sri Lanka's previous government had caused concern in India with its close ties to Beijing, including allowing Chinese submarines to dock. New Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has unnerved China though with his re-examination of relations, including a $1.5-billion Chinese-invested "port city" project in the capital Colombo. How China pipped India at Nepal post  By M.K. Bhadrakumar on October 17, 2015 in Asia Times News & Features, South Asia  As Nepal arrives on the South Asian political landscape as its brand new secular, democratic republic, it is ‘Communist’ China that is in celebratory mood. India is sulking. Beijing is obviously pleased with the election of a communist leader as the prime minister of Nepal, who, by the way, also used to be a ‘Maoist’ at one time in his long chequered political life. The contrast could not be sharper. Beijing looks forward with optimism that the new political dispensation under the leadership of Khadga Prashad Oli as Nepal’s new prime minister augurs well for an intensification of the bilateral cooperation. It is a fresh beginning insofar as Nepal is returning to constitutional rule. http://atimes.com/2015/10/how-china-pipped-india-at-nepal-post/

‘China has filled vacuum left by India’ Kathmandu,  October 18, 2015  Pro-China sentiments can be heard also among the Constitutional fraternity of Nepal.  After hours of brain-storming in Singha Durbar, Nepal’s new Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa left for Delhi and a little later, an electricity outage reminded Nepal of the need to bring an end to the fuel blockade, which is Mr Thapa’s task in Delhi.  http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/china-has-filled-vacuum-left-by-india-nepali-diplomats/article7775295.ece

30 September 2015: Mahathir - Putrajaya overreacted to Huang's remarks, blames government for race perceptions

Putrajaya overreacted to Huang's remarks, says ex-PM Published Today 1:22 pm     Updated Today 2:12 pm; ...."The relationship between China and Malaysia is greater than just the words said by the ambassador who was concerned by race issues that were actually promoted by the government," Mahathir (photo) said. Mahathir's remarks comes as experts on China said Wisma Putra's move to call in Huang was unnecessary and that it should have been dealt with privately..... The whole row can be traced back to the Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu rally on Sept 16, during which red clad protesters clashed with police barring them from entering Petaling Street. This itself was reaction to allegedly anti-Malay insults made during the supposedly Chinese-dominated Bersih 4 rally. Mahathir blamed the government for this perception. "It was the government that mistranslated (Bersih) as a racial issue. It seems that Bersih was a Chinese movement to overthrow a Malay government which is not true at all. "The Bersih demonstration was not Chinese (dominated). Lots of Malays were involved... and what they asked was for the prime minister to step down and to have a better election mechanism. nothing about race at all," he said.
Mahathir has staunchly defended the Bersih 4 rally from criticism, though he said he does not care for the organisers.

29 September 2015: Stop meddling in Chinese envoy issue, Anifah Aman ticks off ministers, China defends actions of its envoy to Malaysia

Stop meddling in Chinese envoy issue, Anifah Aman ticks off ministers Published: 29 September 2015 8:08 AM; Malaysiakini had reported Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz‎ as saying that Reezal had breached protocol when he allegedly summoned Huang to Wisma Putra. However, Reezal told The Malaysian Insider that the order came from Anifah. Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaludin had also reportedly weighed in on the matter, saying Malaysia must send a signal to other countries not to meddle in its affairs. But Anifah said the issue should not have concerned other ministries, as it was usually handled by Wisma Putra’s senior officers. “I want to explain that summoning the Chinese ambassador to Wisma Putra is a normal practice,” said Anifah. “The purpose was to request an explanation from him over the statements he made during his visit to Petaling Street the other day. “Wisma Putra only wanted him to confirm whether his comments had been misinterpreted or otherwise.” He said such a practice was in line with Article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961. - See more at: http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/stop-meddling-in-chinese-envoy-issue-anifah-aman-ticks-off-ministers#sthash.CWM3ajfF.dpuf

Statement from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia - Chinese envoy’s trip to Petaling Street a goodwill visit Updated: Sunday September 27, 2015 MYT 7:56:58 AM; ON Sept 25, Chinese Ambassador Huang Huikang and his wife visited Petaling Street on the occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls today. This is truly a goodwill visit as the ambassador enjoyed celebrating this important traditional festival with the local communities. He paid such visits many times, such as on Spring Festival, Hari Raya and Deepavali. This visit became more remarkable as many Chinese were planning their overseas trip for the forthcoming long holidays and the recent news about this landmark really aroused the concern of many Chinese tourists about their security while travelling in Malaysia. Ambassador Huang wished to show that Petaling Street is still a peaceful and attractive destination and so is Malaysia. The last thing he would like to see is that his goodwill be misunderstood, twisted or used against the China-Malaysia friendly ties. He especially regrets to see some politicians with ulterior motives playing games with his visit and using this against the Malaysian government that he fully respects and supports... — Statement from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia; http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2015/09/27/Chinese-envoys-trip-to-Petaling-Street-a-goodwill-visit/

Envoy: China against terrorism, discrimination and extremism  by qishin tariq AND adrian chan Updated: Friday September 25, 2015 MYT 8:55:52 PM KUALA LUMPUR: China is against those who resort to violence to disrupt public order, said the country's ambassador to Malaysia Dr Huang Huikang.  "The Chinese government opposes terrorism and any form of discrimination against races and any form of extremism,” he told reporters during his visit to Petaling Street on Friday.  Dr Huang warned that Beijing would not fear voicing out against incidents which threaten the interests of the country, infringe upon the rights of its citizens in doing business, or disrupt the relationship between Malaysia and China. During his visit, Dr Huang, his wife, along with other officials from the Chinese embassy presented traders with moon cakes in conjunction with the Mid Autumn Festival.  He was impressed that Malaysia's Chinatown was not run solely by the Chinese but also comprised of traders of various races.  "Business is good here. There are many tourists. I am proud to see Chinese traders working closely with Malay and Indian traders in harmony in developing this area," he said.  He added that it would be sad if the peaceful environment was destroyed by those with questionable intentions, referring to the planned red-shirt rally on Saturday.  http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2015/09/25/China-ambassador-Petaling-Street/
